Like its cousin, the Chevrolet Colorado that was revealed last fall at the Los Angeles auto show, the Canyon is built on a global platform that features a fully boxed frame. Visually helping to set the GMC apart from the Chevy are a specific aluminum hood and fascia styled after the bigger Sierra, squared fender flares, and GMC's signature C-shaped LED running lights. Extended and crew cab models will be available, with the former being offered with a backseat delete option since there will not be a regular cab model. For a more aggressive look, an All-Terrain package is available with 17-inch painted aluminum wheels with all-terrain tires, body-color grille surround and chrome bars, special suspension tuning and a standard automatic locking rear differential.
The Canyon will be available with 2WD and 4WD with engine options at launch including a 2.5-liter I4 producing an estimated 193 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque and a 3.6-liter V6 with an expected output of 302 hp and 270 lb-ft. In most configurations, both engines will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, but the four-cylinder will be available with a six-speed manual only in base extended cab 2WD models. Later on for the 2016 model year, a 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder will join the lineup.
When the Canyon goes on sale this fall, GMC expects it to boast the segment's best payload rating of at least 1,450 pounds and the best max trailering rating of at least 6,700 pounds. GMC also believes it will offer the most fuel-efficient truck in the segment with the two direct-injected engines and the help of active aero grille shutters.
The interior features more premium features like power-adjustable driver's seat, aluminum trim, halo lighting on key controls, rearview camera and a 4.2-inch color driver information screen. A healthy dose of tech is available, including forward collision warning, lane departure warning, an 8-inch color touchscreen to control infotainment functions, OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hot spot, the latest OnStar and IntelliLink with gesture and voice recognition, Siri Eyes Free Mode for Apple iPhone and navigation.
Standard on the exterior is a CornerStep rear bumper, two-tier loading that's a platform that splits the bed into an upper and lower section, bed rail, tailgate protectors and 13 reconfigurable and four stationary bed tie-down locations. Additional, you can get an EZ lift-and lower locking tailgate and factory-applied spray-in bed liner as options.
