Some of the best drivers we know sit behind the wheels of heavy-duty pickups every day. On the weekend, they hook up trailers with their sand rails or vintage racing cars and head for the action. So these drivers ought to be interested in the new 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 4WD Crew Cab. That is, if they notice it.
The Silverado 2500 received the same discreet makeover as its lesser 1500-series brethren, which were released last year as all-new 2014 models. Mediation from Alex Trebek would be required in order to see the difference between old and new. Although the face is big and bold, it doesn't say, "Eureka!"
But the Silverado 2500 is meant to work, and this it does with aplomb. The driving experience is remarkable, starting with the performance of the 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8. Even when carrying a ton of flagstones in the 6-foot 6-inch box, the truck surged when beckoned by the right foot. With the help of its mate, the refined six-speed automatic, it delivers 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque as smoothly as milk is transformed into cheese. And sound insulation keeps the whole diesel thing a secret. We saw 21 mpg indicated with the truck unladen, which isn't bad. (No official consumption rating is given.) Diesel exhaust braking is a plus when towing.
In a week with the Silverado 2500, we found the 239.5-inch-long behemoth (let's just call it a 20-footer) inconvenient when participating in a mobbed Sunday-afternoon garden tour in Palm Springs. Otherwise, it's easy and pleasant to drive. The brakes are so good, they deserve to perform on the main stage at Coachella. Ride quality with Z71 offroad suspension is stiff, but a load of fill dirt settles matters. The interior isn't posh in the manner of Silverado 1500 High Country but is pleasant enough and full of Chevy character. The LTZ Plus package adds power-adjustable pedals, high-end audio, parking assistance, and a heated steering wheel.
We wouldn't call the Silverado 2500 a leader in style or feature innovation, but like a lot of our friends, it gets up for work every day, always looking forward to the weekend.
