Infiniti calls it the Q60 and we still mistakenly call it the G, but the alphanumeric that best describes this Infiniti coupe is actually 370Z. The 2014 Infiniti Q60—known until last year as the G37 Coupe—is an aggressive, sharp, and athletic luxury sports coupe that doesn’t skirt around the fact that it shares its chassis and engine with Nissan’s brawny sports car.
Driving the 2014 Infiniti Q60 reminds us of when Infiniti burst onto the entry-level luxury scene with the original G35 in 2003. That car also shared many components with the Nissan 350Z of its time and shocked us with its sporty dynamics and the potent V-6 that made it a true BMW 3 Series competitor for thousands less. The formula became even stronger with the slightly more refined 2008 Infiniti G, which we named an Automobile Magazine All-Star that year.
Six years later, the Q60 continues to impress with its 330-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 that offers instantaneous throttle response and a raspy engine note. Its steering gives just the right amount of feedback and weights up perfectly when you throw the Infiniti into a corner. Yes, the suspension is stiff—due in part to our car’s optional sport package—but the car always feels poised and ready to attack without being uncomfortable. When pushed hard on a good road, it feels like a slightly grown-up version of the muscular, engaging Nissan 370Z we know and love.
When compared with its recently redesigned sedan counterpart, the Q50, the Infiniti Q60 is beginning to show its age. Its six-year-old infotainment system looks dated. You can’t get Infiniti’s dizzying suite of active safety technologies. The Q60’s V-6 is not as smooth and quiet as the revised version in the Q50. But despite all of the things the Infiniti Q60 lacks, we’re more enamored with what it has: real buttons and knobs instead of touchscreens, a snorty exhaust, organic steering feel, and an available six-speed manual transmission. It is too bad Infiniti is now going through an identity transformation, because the brand was really starting to get it right with cars like the G.
