The Porsche Cayman GTS is a new range-topping model, offering more power, a few styling updates and – on this particular car – a new sports chassis that’s 20mm lower than the standard set-up. We’ve had a chance to drive it in the UK for the first time, so is this now our favourite sports coupe?
First, a few notes: the Cayman GTS costs £6,614 more than the Cayman S, which gets you a wonderful-sounding sports exhaust, PASM adaptive dampers (which can be deleted for the sports chassis) and the Sports Chrono pack. Add in a 15bhp power boost and our car’s six-speed manual box, and this feels like the perfect Cayman set-up.
We thought the S was as good as sports cars get, yet this model feels better still. The short-throw gearbox is so accurate that it just seems to fall into gear as soon as you push the clutch. Meanwhile, the steering is so nicely weighted and responsive that you feel comfortable with this car’s limits as soon as you jump in.
And not many competitors seem so approachable on the ragged edge, either. The feel through the brake pedal, steering wheel and even the seats lets you know how much grip there is, if the front is unstable or if the rear tyres are about to slip.
Capping it all off is the excellent 3.4-litre flat-six, which not only sounds incredible, but builds gradually to its 335bhp peak at 7,400rpm. It’s fast, but it’s also seriously smooth – you won’t get caught out by a big hit of torque.
Downsides? Well, while the sports chassis is best for pure driving thrills, the PASM adaptive dampers provide a more cosseting ride for long journeys. Then there’s the price – the Cayman S is still a lovely car, so you’ll have to really treasure your driving
fun to shell out the extra £6,614 for the GTS.
However, you do get more than just the performance upgrades for your cash. The GTS badges, darkened rear lights, excellent sports seats, 20-inch alloys an upgraded interior all make this car feel that little bit more special.
Specify your Cayman GTS like ours and you won’t find anything this side of a Caterham that’s close in terms of fun.
